December 19th, 2009jordan179 @ 05:34 pm: Iran Invades Iraq! (but only one oilfield -- so far)
For years now, Iran has been carrying out a covert invasion of Iraq, by means of Iranian-backed Shi'ite guerilla "insurgents." This week, the invasion just went overt. ( What Happened? )And if Obama doesn't act, and soon, Iran may decide that she can get away with a full-scale invasion. What will happen if Obama carries out his promised troop withdrawal from Iraq? What if Iran has nuclear weapons by then? The ball's in your court, Mr. "President." Want to fight a war for oil? Or would you rather see Iran conquer the Mideast? Speak up, man! No, the teleprompter isn't ready yet. No, you can't vote "present." The decision is yours. Athena help us all. Current Mood: worried

The snowstorm hasn't abated yet - the depth of accumulation is currently around 18" is areas which are relatively wind-sheltered (i.e. my back yard). The pink thingy is a ruler, and it's flush on our patio table. I learned today that snow-shoveling is not okay on Shabbat: per RDBF, it's a toldah of plowing. However, when I went and looked at the sources I have on this, plowing seems to be related to planting and preparing actual ground for seeds - I don't see the extension to a non-fertile sidewalk. So there'll be another conversation coming... Current Mood: snowed in Current Music: Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Voodoo Chile (slight return)"

jordan179 @ 07:33 am: Al-Megrahi "Goes Missing" -- Libya Rubbing Britain's Face in Britain's Own Cowardice
Muammar Qadaffi has decided to end the farce of "imprisoning" his assassin Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, and the British are flailing about trying to understand what happened. What happened, of course, is that Qadaffi decided that the British are absurdly weak, and don't deserve even a pretense of appeasement, no matter what he agreed to -- and the British are trying to deny the reality of this. From the (British) TimesOnline, "Mystery as Lockerbie bomber goes missing from home and hospital," by Martin Fletcher, Tim Reid and Angus MacLeod ( http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article6958291.ece): Mystery surrounded the Lockerbie bomber last night after he could not be reached at his home or in hospital.Ooh, "mystery?" Let's see -- we know that in 1988 al-Megrahi, on Qadaffi's orders, put a bomb on a US airliner and blew it up, deliberately murdering American and British civilians. And that both America and Britain, for essentially cynical reasons, did not choose to prosecute the war with Libya that Libya had thus started, any further, even after 1989 when there would have been no bad diplomatic consequences of doing so. But we did capture Al Megrahi, one of Qadafi's minions responsible for this war crime, and the British imprisoned him for a short while, until the Scots decided to release him for some idiotic reason, perhaps to demonstrate why Scotland can't be trusted with national sovereignity. The excuse was that he only had three months to live. And the Libyans agreed that he would be living those few months confined to his house and the city of Tripoli. Well, Al-Megrahi has already lived beyond three months. And now he's gone missing. ( What Happened? )Libya has apparently failed to fulfill the terms of the bargain. Now, the ball is in Britain's court. Because this amounts to sanctioning the Lockerbie bombing, Libya has now committed an act of war against you. What do you do next? Current Mood: angry

cutelildrow @ 08:35 pm: Playing with colors
Well, I've started to color this picture... my hands seem to burn a little less if I'm working on something, especially as it helps take my mind off the peeling skin. I'll probably have itchy blisters again soon. Going to experiment with a color method that intrigued me. Overall, I'm rather happy with Shadow's legs now. I'll have some dinner, then work on the body lines of the other picture that's been giving me problems. Still, whee, I'm rather pleased with the results of the work so far. I think this is good practice, as I've been asked a couple of times if I do commissions... I'm shy about it because I don't know how to draw a lot of things... but I will practice while I can... marycatelli @ 10:31 pm: an alphabet of names
You want to vary your names so the readers can tell the characters apart. Make them long and short, keep them from rhyming, make them distinctive, give them different initial letters. . . . The last is especially important for your dyslexic readers. I have heard of dyslexics who can not puzzle out the name and so go by the first letter. Some can puzzle out the first few letters, and others the first letter and the general shape -- but variety helps them. May be impossible in a long work to have fewer than 26 named characters. (Worse if your setting has no fitting names beginning with X or Z or what have you.) But varying them can help even there. The hero or the heroine, or even major characters, I chose the name with care, partly because knowing the right name -- with all its attendant baggage and expectations -- helps define the character. But bit characters -- well, before I use them all, I look down the character sheet and chose the first letter of the alphabet that hasn't started a name yet, if I have no ideas for a name. It helps limit the search. Once I get over a couple dozen, I find I have to go through and count how many start with each letter. Then I go for the unrepresented letters. If I don't watch out, the names will cluster on one -- or at best, two or three -- letters. Tags: names, writing technique
eric_hinkle @ 07:08 pm: Be careful in SE PA this weekend
Not only is it the last shopping weekend before Christmas, but we're getting a snow storm coming in that the local news is calling "crippling". And my brother's car is in the shop (and no rental car), and my sister has to work tomorrow. And they expect more snow Thursday -- which is when my family is going to visit the family in the Quakertown area. I HOPE we've got a better ride than my beat up old car by then. Y'know, if Christmas ever decided to be a little less exiciting for this famiy one year I wouldn't complain. I really wouldn't. Best all. Tags: family, weather

cutelildrow @ 05:47 am: I need incendiaries, stat. Fuck it. I need a good ol RPG.
Dear neighbors I don't care if it's your birthday. Karaoke at that volume at any point past 10 pm should be reason enough for you idiots to DIAVE. At any point past midnight, it should be a justifiable homicide. Jerks. Between them and the horrific itching of my hands and feet, I've had less than two hours sleep, and it's twenty to six am. The only good thing is, I've actually made progress on some lineart I'm doing. There are mistakes. But I will tidy that up later. Crossposted from Deviantart. eric_hinkle @ 02:41 pm: My story got published!
One of my Balam stories (Aztec-style heroic fantasy with furry characters) has been bought by Will Sanborn and will be narrated in podcast by Peter Katt. Yes, I honestly sold something I wrote to someone. I'll be posting more info here in the future on just when it'll be broadcast so you can hear it. Whatever else happens, from this point on I can say that I am a for-real professional author. Thank you, Mister Sanborn, and thanks to everyone else who ever gave me any support and/or advice on my writing. Best all! Tags: balam, heroic fantasy, writing
johncwright @ 05:23 pm: Forgetting How to Make Action Films
A reader asks: "If you are looking for movies to discuss, how about the one due out this Friday, Avatar, what looks to be a classic science fiction vehicle?" Discuss movies? You dare to ask me to discuss movies! Prepare yourself, then, for discussion! I will discuss and discuss til my discusser is sore! But there is not much to say about AVATAR -- it looks from the commercials to be like an update of FERN GULLY, DANCES WITH WOLVES, and POCAHONTAS except without the really goodlooking Disney princess in the lead, and no singing trees. In other words, the same old Enviro-Marxist Kill-the-Rich, Hate-the-Whites crap. You are supposed to cheer when the marines die. ( Read more... )
